PRESENT STATUS OF SYPHILIS IN JAPAN

Abstract
The statisitical survery of syphilis in Dermatological Clinic of Kyushu University Hospital from 1906 to 1975 was reporte(L The syphilitic patients with muco-cutaneous lesions increased sharply after World War II and gradually declined due to the increased use of penicillin. A decline to zero lasted for 7 years (1955-1961). Recently, a new epidemic of syphilis was encountered in and around 1964 in Japan, but again followed by a progressive
decline and primary and secondary. syphilis disappeard completely since 1970, excepting only one case of chancre. According to the statisitica.l data recently obtained from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the morbidity rate of venereal diseases in Japan is remarkably lower in comparison with that of the United States and European countries.
